Choosing to Start a Homestead.
The idea to start a homestead came up about 10 years ago. It seems so dreamy to get out of the city, leave the hustle and bustle and enjoy the countryside. Living off the land, being self sufficient, going back to nature.
First off, we are NOT from the city, not a big one anyway. We are from a small rural community. Our current location is much more condensed than where I grew up.
As a teenager, we actually were on a “homestead” but it was before the term became so popular. We rented a home on five acres and worked the land into a large garden. We cultivated our crops and canned the excess to store for later use.
Later in life, I was in the city. I was miserable! Life led us to this tiny little corner of Northern California, where there is a string of small communities. But the self sufficient life is almost impossible here.
Self Sufficiency Homestead
We have really harsh winters and dry summers. The growing season is only about six weeks long, and you could even get a frost in July!
This does not make growing crops easy. You can’t start early, and if you start too late, then you barely get a harvest before the first frost in September. Some things will never be able to thrive.
Since gardening is so hard in this climate, the research began. Where is the best place to homestead? What is important in a homestead site? Where do you need to go to prepare? What kinds of things are important to you in your quest for self sufficiency?
What we dreamed about.
We really wanted to teach the kids what it is like to not be tied down and reliant on working for someone else. We want to teach them how to live unencumbered by society and be responsible for your own survival.
Our family wanted to live off the land that we owned. We didn’t want to go to a job everyday to earn money to pay for someone else’s property. It is our desire to put in the blood, sweat and tears to start a homestead.
Why Homesteading is right for us.
We grew up in the country. Like most, we work hard, we play hard, we enjoy life. We are up for the challenge to make this dream happen!
The logical next step is to do more research…..
