When you want a new greenhouse, you have choices. You can design and build your own (like I did last time), or you can buy a ready to assemble kit. This article will go over the pros and cons of each and give a rundown of the best kits available this year.

Building Your Own

yes! Building your own from scratch! That is exactly what we did before, check it out here: How to Build an Off Grid Solar Greenhouse. Ah, my first blog post too, I was still learning at that point. But besides that, it was a great greenhouse.

Not everyone is as inclined or has the tools for such a creation. I did my research, and looked through hundreds of pins for inspiration and finally decided to get what I wanted, it would be a home build. Gearing up for Greenhouse 2.0, I’m looking harder at those kits for ease of installation.

My biggest concern is durability for cost ratio. Is it going to withstand the weather, and what is the overall cost for quality? Let’s face it, in today’s world products have gotten much lower quality for the buck. It is actually a hard decision to decide what is best.

Greenhouse Kits

Greenhouse kits come in a variety from your simple little seed starter to a monstrous greenhouse serious gardeners only dream about. Let’s focus on what will fit in most back yards we find in suburbia today shall we?

After we figure out size, we then need to look at materials. In general, if the plastic is foldable in anyway, it’s not going to last more than a season or two at best. I try to steer clear of plastic sheeting due to sun rot and mildew issues. To get good plastic sheeting, you need to pay for the UV rating so it will hold up.

Now we decide on construction materials. You will definitely want aluminum over plastic. And heavy duty too. This is why I ultimately decided to just build from wood. I just couldn’t be sure of quality when ordering online.

Affordable Kits

Keep in mind what your purpose is in building a greenhouse.

Starter kits:

Seed starter kits are great for just that. Starting seeds. They give you shelves and a wind barrier for your seed trays. That’s about it.

Not super durable, thin poles that come apart to store for the summer. Thin plastic sheeting to encase the outside. Here are a few to choose from:

These will get you a protected outdoor space in most areas to start seedlings. I personally don’t think they will last an entire season for serious growing. I do like a little temporary shed on the back porch to get started though.

Affordable Hoop Houses:

For something a little bit more involved that you can walk into, and starting with the budget conscious gardener check out these recommendations:

I like hoop houses, I really do. But have you seen what happens to them in wind? I made my own once. It was about 30 feet long and 9 feet wide. What a fiasco getting all that PVC pipe! And we were in snow country. Never again, it lasted one spring. And then I had tons of pipe left for a multitude of uses for years after.

But these are quick, affordable and will get the job done to protect your baby plants for a while. I would use these as bed covers for the short amount of time they are needed to protect from cold and then store to get more use out of them.

Permanent Greenhouses:

I don’t even want to get started on the overpriced greenhouse websites! Who actually pays that much? Not me for one! When faced with a nine THOUSAND dollar price tag ( and more!), I opted to customize my own. Yikes! Really?

So, for overall cost and durability, here are the best options for your money:

With these 10 amazing greenhouse kit choices, you can chose what fits your budget and needs. Sure its nice to dream about a greenhouse bigger than your house, but who really does that? Realistically, these greenhouses will suit most peoples needs just fine.

Greenhouse Location

I’m still trying to find the location for my new greenhouse. I’ve been busy clearing out downed trees and weeds looking for just the right spot. I am probably going to have a seed starter kit on the porch for a bit, then go with a larger 6×12 kit and possibly a hoop house. I’m going to go with one of each of the options and transfer from one to the other as the plants need change.

I have at least tested many options when it comes to greenhouses. I know what works and what doesn’t depending on the location and weather. It’s up to you to decide what you want, and what you want to pay for it.
